THE LIGHTER SIDE OF THE IPHONE 3G LAUNCH…

iPhone World June 30th, 2008

So we’ve seen the more negative side of the iPhone 3G launch over the past few days. It all started with the announcement of the Rogers iPhone 3G voice/data plans (I think this upset a few people). That resulted in various internet uprisings, along with grassroots petitions against Rogers, the company that ruined the iPhone 3G according to some. Looks like CNN has caught this hot button issue and posted about it as well.

The Joy of Tech…laughter is the best tech support

Well, I think it’s time to take a step back from all the negativity and look at a lighter side of things. You know, sometimes we just need to step back and smell the roses. Take a break. Rest our brains. Yes, Rogers is pretty much “screwing” Canadians over in the words of some, but at the moment there’s not a whole lot we can do about it (aside from speaking with your wallet on July 11th).

Some of you may already read the Joy of Tech, but here’s one of their latest comics that involves the Apple iPhone 3G. When I saw this I knew I had to post it here on the blog! It made me chuckle and hopefully you’ll get a laugh too.

I think the last guy in the comic is trying to buy an iPhone 3G from Rogers, haha! As for the guy in the middle, the wife “quote” is pure gold. Does this comic apply to you? Enjoy your Monday. )

**EDIT** Oh, here’s a FRESH comic about the whole Rogers failure with plans…now this is huge attention! This comic is SO TRUE! Please Rogers, wake up and smell the coffee! Enjoy folks!

ROGERS IPHONE 3G VOICE/DATA PLANS INCUR INTERNET REVOLTS

Mention of Rogers iPhone 3G Voice/Data Plans Will Result in a Verbal Backlash

Yikes. That’s the first thing that comes to my mind after reading up on the endless frustrated rants of Canadians after Rogers iPhone 3G voice/data plans were revealed. There’s a saying that history repeats itself, and in this case it chimes true again and again.

Rogers over the years has had a notorious reputation as the “hated” mobile carrier in Canada. Why you ask? Well, for starters their pricing plans have never been “competitive” (why would they need to be when you have a monopology on GSM?!). On top of that, you have a team of poorly trained customer service reps that tell you one thing, then do another (I have first hand experience with this when I found out my 1 year contract was in fact THREE. I called in to Rogers to inquire, and they told me I had signed a 3 year contract. Umm…no, I don’t think I’ve ever done anything of the kind. They then have the nerve to tell me that in order to change my 3 year contract to a 1 year contract, I’d have to pay the $400 early cancellation charge! I DID NOT SIGN 3 YEARS, yet they would not listen to me. That is unacceptable customer service and bad business practice. Okay, rant ends here.)

Well, yesterday’s iPhone 3G voice/data plans did not impress ANYONE. I have yet to read a positive comment on the internet, including the iPhoneinCanada.ca Forums. People right now are just livid and incensed about the plans, even the people who have been patiently waiting over a year for the iPhone’s release in Canada. How can Rogers get away with this?

What Rogers Should’ve Done to Really Hook Canadian iPhone 3G Fans

Let’s imagine another scenario. Say the iPhone 3G voice/data plans were something similar to the following:
300 daytime minutes
6pm unlimited evenings/weekends
Caller ID/Voicemail
2GB data
$60

This plan, created out of thin air sounds much better than $60 for 150 daytime minutes and 400MB of data! The iPhone is the most hyped device around then entire world at the moment–and it’s clear that Rogers wants to take full advantage of this. If a decent voice/data plan was introduced, I guarantee Rogers would steal hundreds if not thousands of Bell and Telus customers making the switch. Yet, they have decided to the road WAY less traveled (I think it’s a chip trail) with expensive, price-gouging plans that offer no value. Don’t forget to add the “value packs” of either $15 or $20 to drive the price up even more.

Flaws in the Rogers iPhone 3G Voice/Data Plans (or, things that are making Canadians angry)

1. 150 daytime minutes for $60. I hope this isn’t an early April Fool’s joke. That equates to 7.5 minutes of talktime during the day in a month (subtracting free weekends). Do you talk more than 7.5 minutes in a day? If you go over these minutes, it’s $0.35 extra PER minute!

2. $15/$20 value packs. Gee, I remember when voicemail and caller ID could be bundled for like $5 or so…now we have to pay $15 or $20 EXTRA? Yeah, I understand that you get 2500 text messages–but who really sends 83 text messages per day?! Also, announcing that 2500 call forwarding minutes are included is not a bonus. Honestly, how many people still use call forwarding?

Without the $20 value pack, your evenings will start at 6PM. If you don’t get the $20 value pack, your free evenings start at 9PM. Yes, that’s right…9PM (Fido’s evenings start at 7pm)! Some people start getting ready for bed at 9PM, yet Rogers expects you to have free calling after that. Obviously customers will not be able to resist waiting until 9PM to call or answer their iPhones–that means $0.35/minute overage charges baby!

3. Fido customers have the upper hand. If you buy an iPhone 3G from Fido, and opt for the $20 value pack you are already one step up on your confused father, Rogers. Fido customers will get 5PM early evenings, versus 6PM for Rogers customers. On top of that, Fido users will have billing by the second (trust me, they will need this more than ever before!), which Rogers will not.

Also, the Fido website states that their users will be rewarded FidoDollars for wireless data usage. So does that mean the more wireless data you use, the more FidoDollars you will collect? Rogers customers have no such reward system in place. Not fair.

4. Useless added facts to confuse customers. The plans state that “unlimited WiFi at Rogers/Fido outlets will be included”. Whoop-dee-do. Free WiFi is pretty much available at any coffee shop, depending on where you live. Why would Rogers/Fido customers want to use WiFi outside a Fido/Rogers outlet? They shouldn’t have to, as a complete and reasonable data plan would be sufficient enough!

Did you notice the detailed explanation of “what you get” with the new data plans? Rogers decided to throw in some big numbers, hoping they’d confuse the average customer. This is what I’m talking about…400 MB, up to 200,000 text emails or 3,100 web pages or 1,360 photo attachments. Of course reading these stats will make it seem impressive, but every user is different.

5. Data plan overage charges. According to Rogers, if you go over your allotted data usage you will be charged the following: 50¢ per MB for the first 60 MB, 3¢ per MB thereafter. For iPhone 3G users not keeping close tabs on their data usage, going over will cost you an arm and a leg. More money for Rogers. Ka-ching! Hmm…maybe my first generation iPhone isn’t looking too shabby at the moment! )

I honestly believe Rogers underestimated that Apple buyers and iPhone 3G techies are very picky when it comes to their purchases. They can easily see past the fact that Rogers is trying to take full advantage of consumers with their iPhone 3G pricing plans. Could Rogers possibly adjust these plans by July 11th? It is possible. Maybe this announcement is just to “test the waters” to see what Canadians feel about these plans. If that’s the case, then it’s another case of what scientists call “EPIC FAIL”.

Rogers iPhone 3G Data Plan Pricing Revealed on their Website

Okay, I’d like to apologize about the previous $30 unlimited confirmation. Looks like my source will have to “disappear” if you know what I mean. Note to self: never trust anyone, ever again! But let’s get onto the REAL news of today…

Regardless of that, today Rogers announced their iPhone 3G data plans. After getting the info immediately from the iPhoneinCanada.ca community, reading the plans made me think do a double take. Let’s take a look at what Rogers has “to offer” shall we?

$60 Voice/Data Gives you…

150 daytime + Unlimited Evenings/Weekends (are you for real?!)
400MB data
75 Sent text messages
Unlimited incoming text messages (this has always been the case, advertising it makes it seems special)
Unlimited Voicemail (those capped voicemails inboxes are gone forever…)

$75 Voice/Data Gives you…
300 daytime + Unlimited Evenings/Weekends
750MB data
100 Sent text messages
Unlimited incoming text/voicemail

$100 Voice/Data Gives you…
600 daytime + Unlimited Evenings/Weekends
1GB data
200 Sent text messages
Unlimited incoming text/voicemail

$115 Voice/Data Gives you…
800 daytime + Unlimited Evenings/Weekends
2GB data
300 Sent text messages
Unlimited incoming text/voicemail

According to the official Rogers press release…this is what the above data will give you “access” to:

Data Usage - What You Get
————————————————————————-
Monthly
Data Usage   Online Applications
————————————————————————-
400 MB       up to 200,000 text emails or 3,100 web pages or 1,360 photo
attachments
————————————————————————-
750 MB       up to 380,000 text emails or 5,900 web pages or 2,560 photo
attachments
————————————————————————-
1 GB         up to 524,000 text emails or 8,000 web pages or 3,500 photo
attachments
————————————————————————-
2 GB         up to 1,048,000 text emails or 16,000 web pages or 7,000
photo attachments
————————————————————————-

This pricing includes:
- unlimited Wi-Fi access at all Rogers and Fido Hotspots. (wowsers!)

Two voice value packs:
$15/month: Caller ID, Who Called, Caller Ring Trax, 2,500 Sent Text Messages and 2,500 Call Forwarding Minutes
$20/month: Caller ID, Who Called, Caller Ring Trax, 10,000 Sent Text Messages and 6:00 p.m. Early Evening Calling and 2,500 Call Forwarding Minutes.

Special note: Fido customers with the $20/month plan get 5pm evenings…they are LUCKY!

All I have to say right now is WOW…these plans definitely are not what we expected. No unlimited plan as we had predicted in the past, but these plans are…I hate to say it…a start. The $60 plan starts with 400MB of data. Granted that is 400MB, but can you imagine how fast you would use that up with YouTube?? Sure, the stats say you can visit 3100 webpages, that makes it about 100 webpages/day.

What really gets to me about the starting $60 plan is the 150 daytime minutes. That is not a lot of minutes at all and people will have overages–that’s where Rogers will make its money on you! So many other voice plans out there include more than 150 minutes. This makes me feel like we’re moving backwards here…help me…I’m dizzy!

Caller ID you ask? The only way to get that is to add on one of the “voice value packs”. The cheapest one is $15/month, so you’re already looking at $75/month for using the iPhone 3G. Yikes. Let’s do a quick calculation…

How much is an iPhone 3G going to cost me over my mandatory 3 year contract?

Let’s say you choose the $60 plan as a bare minimum plus the $15/month voice value pack…

$199 iPhone 3G after taxes (in BC at least) = $224.87

$60 voice/data plan + $15 voice value pack + $6.95 SAF = 81.95 + GST/PST = $92.60/month

$92.60 x 36 months (3 year contract) = 3333.60 + $224.87 = $3558.47 over 3 years!

Divide that cost over the span of 3 years to include the iPhone 3G, you’re looking at roughly $99/month to use the iPhone 3G in Canada with Rogers. Are you going to add this new cost to the already increasing cost of living in this country? It really depends on your needs, and if you have the extra cash to spare.

Well done Rogers, well done. Kudos for offering plans with great value to Canadians! Right now Rogers shareholders are probably rejoicing as they will know that Canadians will continue to get gouged for voice/data plans, compared to the rest of the world.

ICRACKS: IPHONE PRANK GONE WILD - PLUS $30 UNLIMITED DATA CONFIRMED!

It’s been a while since I last reviewed a 3rd party application for the iPhone. Anyways, even though the iPhone 3G is around the corner along with the much anticipated AppStore, the development community is still hard at work. Today we’re going to check out a fun app called iCracks. It’s one of the best ways to prank your iPhone-newbie friends–trust me, this will freak them out!

Once you’ve installed iCracks via Installer, run the program. You’ll come across an image of the default iPhone homescreen. This is where it gets interesting. The moment your friend/colleague/family member/dog touches the screen, it activates a tiny video that makes it look like your iPhone just went AWOL!

**EDIT** Forgot to include the source! Add this source to Installer: http://i.comicmac.com/repo.xml

This app will work best on technophobic people, such as older parents and people who have never seen/used/touched an iPhone before. The application also disables the home button for a minute or two…but within my tests an immediate press of the home button exits the program. Give it a shot!

Watch the following video review to see it in action:

Rogers iPhone 3G Data Plan Update: $30 Unlimited Plan Confirmation

Here’s an update on the rumored iPhone 3G $30 unlimited data plan. I received an email from a Rogers employee that has been undergoing iPhone 3G training. Within the email, it was stated the the $30 unlimited data plan is indeed true, plus MMS will not be available on the Rogers iPhone 3G. Also, applications will stay running if an incoming call is answered. Take these tips with a grain of salt, but so far it looks as though the $30 unlimited plan might be true after all!

ROGERS IPHONE 3G TRAINING GUIDE/FLYER SNEEK PEAK

iPhone World June 26th, 2008

**Pre-order your iPhone 3G invisibleSHIELD and get 20% off your order! Limited time offer, order today!**

The iPhone 3G global launch is coming our way fast and furious. In approximately 2 weeks time, the world will get to experience iPhone 3G’s new features and form factor. It will especially be a glorious day for the millions of Canadians waiting to acquire one from their favorite GSM provider, Rogers.

We’ve managed to view some images of the Rogers iPhone 3G training guide and similarly an iPhone 3G flyer via an anonymous contact. The training guide is known as the “iPhone Student Workbook” from Apple and is just under 50 pages.

This has been provided for all Rogers Wireless employees to prepare them to eat, sleep, and breathe iPhone 3G prior to the launch. In the words of the Spice Girls, this is where “2 becomes 1″…must…master…iPhone 3G specs…

In a nutshell this workbook explains everything in detail about the iPhone 3G and how to sell it to the customer. Topics range from how to use Safari, Google Maps, make a phone call, send a text message, etc. This is the same guide used by AT&T users as I noticed some parts mention a 2 year contract, but we all know by now with Rogers it’s going to be 3 (long) years.

Want to immerse yourself in iPhone 3G training? Read up and sell the device to your friends and family! Here are a few select images:

This flyer here shows some of the iPhone 3G’s latest specifications and acts as Cliff Notes for employees to quickly learn the iPhone 3G inside and out. I can just imagine a newbie employee cramming this information one hour prior to launch. Note the 24 month agreement is for AT&T is not going to applicable in Canada. Take a look for yourself (one image out of four):

Wowzers. The iPhone 3G is going to be pretty sweet that’s all I can say. Steve Jobs and Apple has done it again. This device will sell millions and they will easily meet their target of 10 million iPhones sold in 2008. Now only if that $30 unlimited data plan will come true in Canada…we can only hope, right?
